Our mission



Our mission is to create an environment within our community that offers its participants the opportunity to transcend themselves to a higher state of being. We facilitate the process of becoming mentally and physically tough through the practice of Jiu-Jitsu, kickboxing, MMA and other effective forms of martial arts. We train our students to become athletes capable of addressing any physical task with efficiency and effectiveness. We train to be calm and employ critical thinking skills to solve problems. We train to find our center so balance can be achieved. We offer the opportunity to practice becoming a better person in mind, body and spirit.

At Core Ascent we try to provide an environment for our students to open their minds and learn how to balance calmness with being fierce. We help you become an athlete and teach you why physical fitness is one of the most important elements of your life. We teach you how to fight and protect yourself through an in depth study of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, kickboxing, Japanese Jiu-jitsu, Filipino stick fighting and MMA (mixed martial arts). We focus on strategy and critical thinking skills to unify your mind with your physical abilities. We show you how to find calmness and balance through Yoga and Meditation and we assist you on a journey to unify, strengthen and realize your mind, body and spirit.

Our academy is a place to train hard, learn to be tough, and find mental clarity. We are laid back and love to have fun, but train for real. We value commitment, discourage excuses and push you to find a route to successfully accomplishing your goals.

As instructors we strive to lead by example and are always working on our own self-improvement. We have undergone countless hours of training and have combined years of experience to bring you a well rounded effective approach to living a happy, healthy and active lifestyle.

Brazillian Jiu Jitsu




Jiu-Jitsu is an art/fighting style that utilizes positioning, angles and leverage to defeat larger, stronger and more aggressive opponents. A Jiu-Jitsu practitioner strives for efficiency of movement and superior strategy to achieve victory in combat. Jiu-Jitsu techniques primarily consist of throws/takedowns, grappling, submissions (chokes, joint locks, breaks), and positional control. Jiu-Jitsu is translated as the “gentle art” due to the adaptive and versatile methods it employs.

Grappling arts can be traced to ancient Greece and beyond. However, it was the Samurai (Warrior class of feudal Japan) that honed them to battlefield worthy skills if they were ever disarmed in combat. The Samurai lived by a code of ethics and honor (Bushido) that exemplified how the art was practiced until they were disbanded during Japans Meji restoration period (1868-1912). It was at this time that the art of Jiu-Jitsu went through a significant change. The effectiveness of the skills of Jiu-Jitsu were not in question. However, the ability to practice them in actual combat no longer existed. This led to the development of Judo. The concept was to remove many of the destructive techniques in Jiu-Jitsu and replace or modify them with techniques that could be practiced against an opponent without maiming or killing them. Judo was developed into a sport that allowed practitioners the opportunity to train in a competitive environment. The next significant change occurred after a renowned Judo practitioner went to Brazil and began teaching the art to a prominent family. Their innovation and ingenuity laid the foundation for what is now Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This “new style” of Jiu-Jitsu is highly regarded as one of the most proven contemporary self-defense methods.

At Core Ascent we have decades of experience in both classical Jiu-Jitsu as well as the more modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. We utilize techniques and strategies that are proven in combat – whether it be on the street or a sporting environment. We study both classical and contemporary methods to be well-rounded, efficient and knowledgeable students of the art.

 

 

Kickboxing




Our kickboxing class is broken down into three phases: pad work/skill development, contact drills and sparring. Our kickboxing classes will help you develop effective combat skills while helping you push your cardiovascular limits. This is not a cardio kickboxing class; you learn how to move effectively and utilize proper fighting skills.

Pad work, bag work and skills training – In these classes you learn how to move and strike correctly. We employ various types of weapons that include punching, kicking, knees and elbows. We teach you how to coordinate your body in applying power and precision to develop effective kickboxing techniques. These classes will make you sweat; they are meant to be a workout. In all our kickboxing classes you will be striking various pads or bags to get the feel and confidence of hitting something. This will develop stronger bones and muscles while relieving stress and allowing you to work out any aggression you might have.

Contact drills – This method of training teaches students how to block, move and evade strikes coming at them. You learn how to be counter offensive and develop the understanding of proper distancing and angles in a fight. We wear padded gear to minimize the risk of injury and to maximize the opportunity to practice facing an attack. This method of training is essential to developing toughness and overcoming one’s fear of being hit. Sparring – This is where all of your training comes together and where you can test your strategies, techniques and overall skill sets. This is where you can hone your timing and ultimately develop your fighting style. No one is required to spar; however, we have found that after students become comfortable with the other phases, they willingly accept this challenge.

Kickboxing is a high energy class designed to push you. We have tons of fun in this class and help you relieve the stresses of your day through intense physical activity and emotional and/or mental release. Our methods of training are a combination of Muay Thai (Thai style fighting from Thailand) western kickboxing (Karate, Kempo, Tae Kwon Do) and boxing.

 

 

Performance Conditioning




Our definition of Ascent Performance Conditioning is the process of advancing to a higher level of physical and mental effectiveness through a regimen of diet, exercise, rest and mental stimuli to evoke a response to carry out and accomplish any task.

Broken down into individual components, Ascent Performance Conditioning is defined by the following;

1 Ascent - The rise or advancement to a higher level; the movement upward from a lower to a higher state, degree, grade, or status; advancement (this will be of great importance in the philosophy behind our training)

2 Performance - the action or process of carrying out or accomplishing an action, task, or function; the total effectiveness of a system or mechanism.

3 Conditioning - the process of training to become physically fit by a regimen of exercise, diet, and rest; also: the resulting state of physical fitness. There is a psychological meaning that also should be taken into the context as well. Conditioning is a form of learning in which either (1) a given stimulus (or signal) becomes increasingly effective in evoking a response or (2) a response occurs with increasing regularity in a well-specified and stable environment. Both are extremely important for our purposes.

Ascent performance conditioning is a system of physical and mental training that develops athleticism, critical thinking skills and a balance between your mind, body and spirit. You learn to be physically tough, mentally resilient, calm and strategic. You develop the physical abilities to endure and take on any task and excel. You develop the mindset to be happy and gain control of your life. You learn to have focus and recognize the strength that resides in you.

Our methods are designed to help you to become an athlete. We help you understand the value of nutrition and how your energy systems work. We help you develop range of motion, strength, speed, power, agility, coordination, endurance and critical thinking skills. We focus on mindset as much as we focus on developing our bodies. To us athleticism lays the foundations to expand our minds and realize the strength of our spirit. Our methods are great for any age and any stage in life. We work with beginners and advanced students alike. There is always opportunity to accommodate every level of skill and physical ability

 

 

Mixed Martial Arts




MMA is a collective of various fighting styles and methods utilized in sporting events such as the UFC. MMA truly exemplifies the nature of unarmed hand to hand combat by addressing all 3 phases of a fight. The fight can take place in the stand up free movement phase, clinch/grab phase and the ground phase. An MMA practitioner has at least some skill sets in each of these areas. Although MMA is bound by the rules governing the sport, the skills can easily translate to a street self defense situation. Typically an MMA practitioner will be a highly conditioned athlete and have a solid foundation in one or more fighting disciplines.

Our MMA classes allow students to practice their skills in a controlled environment. You do not need to compete to participate in these classes. However, some level of contact is required to get the full benefits of the training.

Our trainers have brought home championship titles coaching amateur and professional fighters. We spend a great deal of time developing our fighters and only enter into competition when we feel that they are ready.
